A Plentiful Autumn

October 22, 2024

Due to the recent warmth, the fall harvests are quite plentiful and coming in from the field ahead of schedule! Thanks to the team’s hard work, we are sharing a beautiful harvest with you this week.

The weather also gifted us time to finish end-of-season projects in relative comfort. Our current farm work is focused on preparing for the eventual cold to come.

Jeff’s students help us seed for fall and winter crops and finish planting hoophouses where we will grow winter greens. Jeff’s students are also helping to glean excess produce and deliver to local food pantries.

Hundreds of students from Grayslake District 127 culinary and baking classes toured the farm and gleaned produce for learning in classrooms. At the end of the season, everything has a purpose, place and use!

Food preservation is still an important fall theme. This year’s ginger harvest was less successful than in previous years, so we harvested what did well and froze for winter. We also preserved several other produce items that will transition into the Farm Store as the field harvests slow.

We’ve stocked up on healthy, local hay for our pastured animals as the pasture’s growth slows and the trees lose their foliage. The team is also enhancing winter spaces for animals to maximize their health and avoid the dreaded frozen water pipes that must be fixed with chilly fingers. Protecting chickens from the pressures from hungry aerial and ground predators (i.e., hawks and owls, raccoons and possums) becomes increasingly important now.

Finally, we’re well into planning for next season and we will soon announce our 2025 CSA schedule. Your early commitment to our program allows us to plan and order potting soil, seeds, and tools to make plans for the upcoming season before the snow flies.

Celebration and rest are on the horizon for all of us soon, too. Thank you for your continued support through the fall season. We have plenty of great food to share with you!
