As an operating foundation, the Liberty Prairie Foundation operates a variety of programs to advance our mission. These programs are primarily based on the Prairie Crossing Farm, our 100- acre working organic farm nestled within the Prairie Crossing conservation community in Grayslake – widely recognized for combining the preservation of open land with sustainable agriculture.
The Chicago region needs more sustainable local food farms to feed a metropolitan area hungry for local, healthy food. Modeled after the incubator model of the tech industry, the Farm Business Development Center prepares new farmers to meet the demand for locally-grown organic food. We provide new farmers with a head start by beginning their business in an incubator setting with affordable access to certified organic land near the Chicago-area customer base. Farmers gain practical experience while gradually scaling up their business to eventually launch at a more permanent farm location.
The Liberty Prairie Foundation also supports educational programming at the Prairie Crossing Farm to educate and inspire people to value healthy food, land and community through experiences on our farm. We envision a world where people of all ages are deeply connected to their food, land and community and therefore make choices toward sustainable systems in nature and society. We offer a variety of youth development programs, educational tours, community garden plots, and lifelong learning events.
The Liberty Prairie Foundation also partners with exceptional organizations to engage in innovative projects that relate to our impact areas of sustainable local food, conservation, environmental education, and social entrepreneurship. Click here to learn more about our Impact Areas.
