Weissduo – Early Music Series 2016-2017
4 p.m. Sun., Jan. 29 at the Byron Colby Barn in Grayslake
In 1743, the famous Silvius Leopold Weiss, lutenist and theorbist in the Dresden Orchestra and one of the highest paid musicians in Europe, visited the home of JS Bach along with his student Kropfganss. Bach’s son reports that some extra fine music was heard during this visit. In fact not many know that Bach’s BWV 1025 Suite for Violin and Continuo began as a Weiss lute solo. In this program lutenist Joel Spears is joined by violinist Janelle Davis in recreating the moment when Bach created a violin contrepartie to Weiss’s original creation. Also included is music for violin and lute by Haydn and Rust.
