Through a partnership with the Lake County Health Department, in 2013 the Prairie Farm Corps established a vegetable distribution site in Round Lake for recipients of WIC Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) fresh vegetable vouchers.
Prairie Farm Corps participants present during regularly scheduled nutrition sessions held by the Lake County Health Department to distribute the fresh vegetable vouchers to their clients. After the nutrition sessions, the women receiving the FMNP vouchers have the option to exchange them immediately for fresh organic vegetables.
This collaboration between the Prairie Farm Corps and the Lake County Health Department benefits the larger under-served community in Lake County by improving access to fresh, healthy vegetables as well as increased nutrition education. Approximately 1/3 of the Prairie Farm Corps participants live in Round Lake, so this also allows them an opportunity to connect with and contribute to their local community.
In 2015, this project was expanded to also include a distribution site in Waukegan, facilitated by the Liberty Prairie Foundation’s Outreach Interns.
