Harris Road and follow the trail along the farm’s outer ridge, providing a perfect vantage point for viewing the farm. Prepare to get your heart rate pumping along this hilly trail of crushed gravel while soaking in the beauty of the farm.

Jeff & Jen will discuss Sandhill’s organic growing practices, pest management strategies, season extension methods, and more. Mike Sands will discuss how the conservation features of the Prairie Crossing development influence the Prairie Crossing Farm. The hike will conclude near Sandhill’s flock of free-range chickens. Good Agricultural Practices discourage even the best trained animals near fields used for growing food, so please leave all pets at home except service dogs. The Prairie Crossing Farm is a smoke-free facility.

Jeff and Jen Miller have farmed at the Prairie Crossing Farm since 2006, operating a successful farm business that produces certified organic vegetables, free range eggs, and more. Sandhill Family Farms sells to over 500 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) members throughout the Chicago region, and at the Oak Park Farmers Market. Farm products will not be sold during the Farm Ridge Hike.

Sandhill Family Farms has two farm locations operated as a partnership. The Prairie Crossing Farm location in Grayslake is managed by Jeff and Jen Miller, and the Brodhead location in Wisconsin is managed by Matt and Peg Sheaffer. In addition to running their family farm business, Sandhill serves a crucial role at the Prairie Crossing Farm as the mentor farmer for the Farm Business Development Center, and a demonstration of a very successful for-profit organic farm business.

The Liberty Prairie Foundation’s partnership with Sandhill extends beyond their long-term lease of farm land and facilities at the Prairie Crossing Farm. Sandhill provides technical assistance for the overall management of the farm, and is a leader and a partner in many of the Foundation’s food systems initiatives. Sandhill was named the first “Mentor Farmer of the Year” by the Upper Midwest Collaborative Regional Alliance for Farmer Training (CRAFT) and Angelic Organics Learning Center in 2013.

The July 8 field walk will be held rain or shine, so please dress appropriately for the weather. Participants will walk around a working farm on uneven surfaces including wood chips and gravel. All participants should come prepared to walk outdoors with sunscreen, insect repellent, and a filled water bottle.
