“The bride and groom would like me to convey their gratitude and appreciation for helping to make the evening a wonderful success. The Barn is an exceptionally lovely setting for a winter event. The warm and magical feel of the candle-lit Barn lent itself to the romance and intimacy of the occasion, and although I had my doubts, the main floor was ample room for an evening of non-stop dancing. Thank you again for a wonderful evening.” Mrs. Shelia Ryndak
“My husband and I could not have chosen a better venue for our wedding day. Everything was picture perfect and went exactly as planned. The manager, Kim, played a big role in helping us with suggestions and ideas that contributed to the amazing turnout of our day. She responded promptly by email and phone and took much of my wedding planning stresses off my shoulders! Working with Kim was like working with a friend, as she shared my excitement and enthusiasm. I would highly recommend the Byron Colby Barn to any couple who is looking for a special wedding day!” Lauren and Matthew Scholl
“I just wanted to say a quick thank you (so much) for everything you did to make Sarah + Jamie’s wedding FANTASTIC. I think it’s safe to say everyone had a blast on Sunday. I know it takes a village to make it happen as seamlessly as we did, so thank you for being an amazing village to work with over the past couple of weeks and especially as we got down to the final days! I hope to work with all of you again in the very near future!” Elizabeth Tulipana
“We recently had our best friend’s baby shower at Byron Colby Barn. The barn was simply beautiful – rustic, charming, and warm – and conveniently located for our guests. Kim, the manager, is very welcoming and cheerful. She gave us suggestions and recommendations and promptly answered all our questions. From the crisp beautiful weather of January, great food, gorgeous barn, friends and family who came, and Kim’s help… we had ZERO complaints, except that the day had to end.” Gen Kapczyk
“It was great to find out that such a wonderful and rustic barn setting exists so close to Chicago and its suburbs! The back windows offered scenic views you wouldn’t think you could find out of the countryside.” Felix and Fingers Dueling Pianos (click here for the full review and band contact information)

Byron Colby, a local dairy farmer, built the Barn in 1885 on a nearby site overlooking the Des Plaines River. A century later it was scheduled for demolition to make way for development. When the owner instead agreed to donate it to the developers of Prairie Crossing, this historic dairy barn was preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.
Led by restoration architect T. Gunny Harboe and Libertyville contractor Rick Bott, an expert crew carefully deconstructed the Barn timber by timber, numbering each one. In 1996 the Barn was expertly rebuilt in Prairie Crossing, a nationally known conservation community. The original timbers were restored and carefully fitted together with mortise and tenon joints, just as they had been over a century ago. The Byron Colby Barn now proudly stands at the entrance to Prairie Crossing at Route 45 and Jones Point Road as a testament to the quality of Midwestern architecture.
The Barn was named in honor of Byron Colby, the dairy farmer who built it, and repurposed into a unique event venue for the larger Lake County community. The Barn is used in support of the Liberty Prairie Foundation’s mission and its various uses are aligned with the Prairie Crossing Guiding Principles of life-long learning and education, a sense of community, and a sense of place. The Byron Colby Barn also serves as a community center for the Prairie Crossing community, and houses a private fitness center in its basement for residents.
