The Liberty Prairie Foundation hosts events at the Barn including intimate Early Music Series concerts and thought-provoking lectures to foster life-long learning and a sense of community. All users of the Byron Colby Barn sign a rental contract and provide a deposit of $700 to reserve a date and serve as a damage deposit. Deposits are non-refundable for cancellations after 10 days from the date of the contract. All fees are due 10 business days prior to the event. The deposit, minus any damages, will be mailed two weeks after the event. In appreciation for their service to our country, active duty military personnel receive a 10% discount on their total rental fee.
One month prior to the event, Kim DeRose will schedule a meeting to review the event details. To preserve the integrity of the Barn, please respect the following restrictions or your damage deposit may be forfeited. Please complete the Event Details worksheet before your event details meeting, and bring it with you. This is the perfect opportunity to ask last-minute questions and schedule your wedding rehearsal. For weddings with an on-site ceremony, free rehearsal time is provided on Thursday afternoon/evening, or Friday or Saturday between 2-3 p.m.
On days when the Barn is rented, Barn staff are generally on-site from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and will open the Barn for your free decorating time. You are responsible for communication and coordination with your vendors to schedule drop-off times when you can properly place rented items. Many couples find it very useful to designate a family member or friend as their “day of” coordinator. Barn staff do not have the capacity to assist with decorating, removing decorations, or loading/unloading of materials. If you need this type of assistance, we recommend hiring a wedding planner.
During your free decorating hours, Barn staff may conduct pre-arranged showings for other potential renters. Your exclusive use of the Barn begins at the time indicated in your rental agreement. A Byron Colby Barn host will be present at your event to help things run smoothly. Let the festivities begin!

You may hold ONE date for up to 7 days to enable you to attend your scheduled showing, sign a contact, and provide your deposit. Dates that have been held but not reserved within 7 days (with a signed contract and deposit) will be released. Reserved dates sometimes become available due to cancellations, so please check this calendar frequently. Dates that are not marked “busy” have at least some availability. Contact Kim for details.
A professional licensed caterer must provide all food service and professional serving staff, and all caterers must have their own commercial kitchen. If you are serving alcohol, you must hire a licensed, insured bartender either through your professional caterer or from our Preferred Vendors. Many of the Preferred Caterers will provide a licensed, insured bartender for your event. Cash bars are prohibited.
Selecting a caterer from our Preferred Vendors allows for easy event planning. These caterers have extensive experience working at the Byron Colby Barn and offer tasty meal options in a wide price range. We have a high level of confidence in their abilities to offer your guests a delicious meal, from appetizer to entrée.
All rentals for use at the Prairie Crossing gazebo MUST be rented through our Preferred Vendor, to ensure compliance with our agreement with the Prairie Crossing Homeowners Association for use of this space.

Byron Colby, a local dairy farmer, built the Barn in 1885 on a nearby site overlooking the Des Plaines River. A century later it was scheduled for demolition to make way for development. When the owner instead agreed to donate it to the developers of Prairie Crossing, this historic dairy barn was preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.
Led by restoration architect T. Gunny Harboe and Libertyville contractor Rick Bott, an expert crew carefully deconstructed the Barn timber by timber, numbering each one. In 1996 the Barn was expertly rebuilt in Prairie Crossing, a nationally known conservation community. The original timbers were restored and carefully fitted together with mortise and tenon joints, just as they had been over a century ago. The Byron Colby Barn now proudly stands at the entrance to Prairie Crossing at Route 45 and Jones Point Road as a testament to the quality of Midwestern architecture.
The Barn was named in honor of Byron Colby, the dairy farmer who built it, and repurposed into a unique event venue for the larger Lake County community. The Barn is used in support of the Liberty Prairie Foundation’s mission and its various uses are aligned with the Prairie Crossing Guiding Principles of life-long learning and education, a sense of community, and a sense of place. The Byron Colby Barn also serves as a community center for the Prairie Crossing community, and houses a private fitness center in its basement for residents.
